About the event

No society can prosper whilst half the population are prevented from reaching their full potential, economically, socially or politically. But how can we work across sectors to achieve true gender equality?

It was so inspiring to welcome many of our amazing supporters to discuss the importance of gender equality at all levels at our ‘Women’s Equality is Everyone’s Business’ event, which took place at the Design Museum on Wednesday 18th October 2017.

As we heard from Abdoulaye Touré, the Country Director for Women for Women International – Democratic Republic of the Congo, engaging male leadership in any country is essential to any efforts towards supporting the empowerment of women effectively. Over the past 15 years, Women for Women International has worked with almost 21,00 men in our Men’s Engagement Programme.

The training aims to raise men's understanding of and attitudes towards violence against women, girls' education and women's participation in community activities. Through participation in the programme, men can become allies who understand the benefits of promoting gender equality and work in partnership with women.

As our Chair, Sir John Holmes concluded, we hope this event is the start of a hugely important and timely conversation on achieving greater gender equality and that together we will continue to engage men as champions for women’s empowerment.
