The Uncondemned

The Uncondemned, a documentary film by Michele Mitchell and Nick Louvel, tells the gripping and world-changing story of a group of young international lawyers and activists who fought to make rape a crime of war, and the Rwandan women who came forward to testify and win justice where there had previously been none.

Up until 1997, rape had not been prosecuted as a war crime and was committed with impunity. This is the against-the-odds story of their fight for the first conviction and of the women who braved witness assassinations to testify.

The Premiere screening and dinner raised vital funds needed to offer women survivors of war and sexual violence the support, tools and access to life-changing skills which they need to rebuild their lives.

Women for Women International has helped over 73,000 women in Rwanda for over 19 years now, women who are brave, strong and resilient like the women who testified in the landmark case depicted in The Uncondemned. We are deeply committed to raising awareness of the devastating impact that sexual violence has on women, their families and communities and to call on those in power to act urgently to end impunity and to provide adequate support and protection to women.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion with special guests including Pierre Prosper (Lead Counsel for the Prosecution in the case against Rwandan Mayor, Jean-Paul Akayesu); Patricia Sellers (Legal Advisor for Gender, International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda) and Binaifer Nowrojee (former Researcher for Human Rights Watch in the Women's Rights Division).
