Stand with women in Afghanistan

2011 marked the tenth anniversary of the Allied intervention in Afghanistan. As Western governments are talking about bringing their troops home the situation on the ground in Afghanistan remains critical.

Endemic violence, combined with dismal healthcare and brutal poverty, mean that Afghanistan is currently the world's most dangerous country for women, according to a recent expert poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Respondents cited sky-high maternal mortality rates, limited access to doctors and a near total lack of economic rights. Violence against women is rising daily, fueled by the war, the poverty it brings, and the conservative values it leaves behind. Reports of self-immolation, domestic violence and suicide among women are increasing. At this time of uncertainty, it is imperative that we continue to stand with the women of Afghanistan. Investing in women so that they can earn an income, stand on their own feet and have a voice in society is the only way that enduring peace and security will be achieved.
